About 7.7 million take exams this weekend

About 7.7 million people have ed for the National High-School Exams (Enem). The exams will be applied today (Oct. 24) across the country. The second phase occurs this Sunday (Oct. 25).

According to the National Institute for Educational Studies and Surveys (Inep), responsible for istering the exams, the Enem was created by the government in 1998 in order to assess the performance of basic education students, and thus improve the quality of education.

The city of Rio has set up a special traffic scheme to help organize the city to the exams. Areas with a higher number of candidates will be reinforced by traffic officials, receiving more than 300 men who will guide the drivers to reach their sites of exam.

The increasing number of applicants to Enem every year and all the mobilization gathered around the exams can be explained by the change made in 2009 in which the exam results came to be used as a criterion for ission in universities.

Another reason is that the Enem also gives access to other educational programs financed by the government, like the University for All (ProUni). The purpose of the scholarship program ProUni is to offer fee subsidies for tuition in private universities to undergraduate students. The universities in the program become tax-exempt.
