Brazil reports over 6.5M probable dengue cases this year

Brazil´s Ministry of Health has reported 6,590,575 probable cases of dengue fever in the country this year. At least 5,872 deaths from the disease have been confirmed, and 1,136 are still under investigation. The Brazilian incidence rate stands at 3,245 dengue cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

The state of São Paulo leads in absolute numbers, with 2.1 million probable cases, followed by Minas Gerais (1.6 million), Paraná (653,800), and Santa Catarina (348,500). In of incidence rate, the Federal District ranks first (9,876), followed by Minas Gerais (8,233), Paraná (5,713), and São Paulo (4,841).

Monitoring

In a statement, the Ministry of Health said it had intensified surveillance and control of arboviruses in states where there had been a significant increase in cases. “After Mato Grosso, it is the Ministry's turn to visit Minas Gerais, and the effort is expected to reach Espírito Santo next week, a state where diseases such as yellow fever and oropouche are of concern to health authorities,” she added.

According to the ministry, the goal of these actions is to update epidemiological data, reassess prevention and control strategies, and coordinate efforts with states and municipalities to curb the spread of arboviruses.
